Environmental and Social Impact Assessment availability for the ‘Vulcan - Zero Carbon Lithium Project’
SACE is considering support for the ‘Vulcan - Zero Carbon Lithium Project’, which consists of the development of new wells in the Upper Rhine Valley in Germany, within a sub-surface geothermal-lithium brine reservoir, together with a Geothermal Lithium Extraction Plant to extract lithium chloride from geothermal brines, and produce both geothermal energy and intermediate lithium chloride product, which will be then processed into final lithium hydroxide monohydrate product to be mainly destined to manufacture of batteries.
The Project intends to produce about 24 ktpa of lithium hydroxide, plus over 270 GWh of electrical power and up to 560 GWh of heat from renewable geothermal energy.
